Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library
Go back in time and learn about the life and times of our 28th President, Woodrow Wilson, at his birthplace home. After your guided tour, visit the museum featuring seven exhibit galleries. Highlights include an interactive World War I trench, Wilson’s 1919 Pierce-Arrow Limousine, and historic gardens.
Frontier Culture Museum
One of our favorite nearby museums is The Frontier Culture Museum. This living history museum tells the story of our country’s earliest settlers who migrated from the Old World to colonial America and the life they created in the Shenandoah Valley. Families can take a self-guided tour visiting original farmsteads from England, Ireland, Germany, and America as well as reproduced villages representing West Africans and Native Americans. Costumed interpreters give hands-on demonstrations of weaving, farming, blacksmithing, and cooking as well as tell intriguing stories of their homeland.
Grand Caverns
Have you ever explored a natural limestone cavern? The Grand Caverns in Virginia is the oldest continually operating show cave in the United States and is one of the region’s natural wonders. Staying at a cool 54 degrees, this cavern is unlike anything you’ve seen before. The cave is made of Cambrian limestone and is known for its cave shields, stalactites, and stalagmites. There are two tours to choose from that are both sure to satisfy the adventurer at heart.
Gypsy Hill Park
When you’re spending the day exploring downtown Staunton, you’ll be within walking distance of Gypsy Hill Park. This sprawling 214-acre multi-use recreational destination has everything you need for a day full of outdoor excitement. For the younger ones, we recommend touring the duck pond where you can feed the swans, ducks, and fish along with taking a ride on the miniature train, The Gypsy Express. The older kids will like cruising along the play street on their bikes or scooters or try out the skate park. Gypsy Hill Park also features a fishing lake, golf course, community pool, picnic tables/pavilions, baseball fields, basketball courts, and more.
American Shakespeare Center
No visit to Staunton is complete without a stop at the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse. The Playhouse is the world’s only recreation of Shakespeare’s original indoor theatre, and people travel from near and far to see award-winning performances which range from Shakespearean classics to newer and contemporary plays. Short on time and can’t see a production? Take a backstage tour and learn about Shakespeare’s staging conditions, Elizabethan history, and much more!
