Ready for an Adventure?
If you’re looking for “s’more” action, you’ll definitely want to take in the Blue Ridge Parkway at this time of year. Staying at The Blackburn makes it easy to hop on and off this notoriously scenic drive. Whether you’re a car enthusiast, motorcyclist, bicyclist, or RV road warrior, the Blue Ridge Parkway is not to be missed. Plan your trip along the parkway using this guide!
If you prefer to go on foot to view the fall foliage, you can easily go for a hike, accessing trails from the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of our favorite areas is Humpback Rocks, which is an area that is rich in beauty, history, and of course, scenic trails! Starting at milepost 5.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and heading to the top of Humpback Rocks, you can choose to do a 2-mile out-and-back hike, or a 4.3 mile long loop. Once you’re on the trail, you’ll be able to see spectacular views and amazing fall colors!
Just north of Staunton is the Grand Caverns. A national natural landmark, Grand Caverns is the oldest continually-operating show cave in the United States, located a short distance from The Blackburn. Whether you're a history buff, a nature-lover, an adventurer, or just someone who enjoys a great setting to explore with your friends or family, the Grand Caverns is your place. To explore the caverns, you will need to book a tour in advance.
Feeling Festive?
For history buffs and foodies, Oktoberfest is the fall festival for you! This year, the Frontier Culture Museum is hosting their annual Oktoberfest event on October 7th from 12pm to 7pm. They will have live music from the Stonewall Brigade Band, SGTEV Hirschjäger, and the Edelweiss Band. In the museum itself, you’ll be able to learn how Germans in the 18th century brewed beer and cooked festival meals, and try the beers and food yourself! Read more on their website.
The Shenandoah Fall Foliage Bike Festival is back this year on Friday, October 20th through Sunday, October 22nd. This festival is a full weekend of cycling for experienced riders, recreational riders, novices, and families! There are various rides to see the foliage throughout the weekend, ranging from 8 miles to 100 miles. After your ride, join your fellow riders for a celebratory meal with live music. For a full break-down of the weekend's events, visit shenandoahbike.org!
