Join us as we explore the work of architect Thomas Blackburn and the property’s transformation over the course of almost 200 years from resort-style asylum to regional correction facility to luxury boutique hotel, conference center and spa.
Here’s your itinerary:
Tuesday, October 26:
4 PM: Check-in to your hotel accommodations.
5:30 PM: Join us for a cocktail reception in our newly renovated conference center hosted by owner and developer Robin Miller. We will welcome guests with light hors d’oeuvres and drinks for you to enjoy while mingling with others.
Chat with Robin as he shares his love of old buildings and passion for saving them, which he has been restoring and redeveloping for over 40 years. As a Tennessee native, and a graduate of West Point and Harvard Kennedy School, he has the perfect mix of Southern charm, discipline, and smarts. He has specialized in the adaptive re-use of historic properties throughout Virginia, including several hospitals, a furniture store, an elementary school, a bakery, a YMCA, a luggage factory, and a synagogue.
7 PM: Enjoy dinner on your own at delectable restaurants in downtown Staunton conveniently located near our boutique hotel. We will be happy to recommend local dining establishments.
Wednesday, October 27
8:00 – 9:30 AM: Virginia breakfast in The Great Hall
9:30 AM: Meet in The Great Hall where Robin Miller will present a historical overview of the 80-acre property. This will highlight architect Thomas Blackburn and the property’s transformation over the course of almost 200 years from resort-style asylum to regional correction facility to luxury boutique hotel, conference center and spa. The dramatic restoration will be documented by remarkable “before and after” photos.
A private “Behind the Scenes” walking tour with Robin will follow where you will explore the grounds, abandoned buildings, and renovated spaces at The Blackburn Inn and Conference Center. Learn about the preservation process, historic tax credits, and upcoming plans for the property. Catch a glimpse of Thomas Blackburn’s signature and seal dated 1828 which a worker found in a cubby hole!
- Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum. Guided group tour of Museum and Manse offered at 12PM, 2PM & 3PM. Reservations required.
- Explore Staunton’s six historic districts on the National Registry of Historic Places. Learn about the influence of architect TJ Collins and the various architectural styles incorporated throughout this charming downtown.
4 PM: Wine tasting at Barren Ridge Vineyards. Enjoy the amazing sunset view over the Shenandoah Valley!
Relax and enjoy dinner on your own this evening.
Thursday, October 28
8:00 – 9:30 AM: Continental breakfast in Second Draft Bistro.
10 AM – 12:30 PM: Guided tour of Frontier Culture Museum.
12:30 PM: Lunch on your own followed by departure.
