All About the Grand Caverns in Virginia
One of the best parts about the Grand Caverns in Virginia is that you can visit the caverns year-round. It’s time to start planning your unforgettable excursion!
History of the Grand Caverns
Grand Caverns, formally known as Weyer’s Cave, is located in Grottoes, VA. The cave was discovered in 1804 by Bernard Weyer, who was trying to retrieve one of his hunting traps. In 1806 the caverns opened for tours and are now recognized as a National Natural Landmark.
Are you a history buff? If so, you’ll want to check out the Civil War signatures in the cave. During the war and the “Valley Campaign,” the cave was visited by Confederate and Union soldiers, who left their mark behind with over 200 verified signatures on the walls. The most notable signature is W. W. Miles, which is easily seen and pointed out on most cave tours.
What To Expect
Grand Caverns in Virginia is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. The cave is made of Cambrian limestone and is known for its breathtaking shield formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, and other flowstone formations.
You can find various rooms throughout Grand Caverns, one of the most famous being the “Cathedral Hall,” which is over 70 feet high and is one of the largest rooms in any cavern in the country. Other impressive sights and rooms include “Bridal Veil,” “Stonewall Jackson’s Horse,” and the “Tapestry Room.”
